PRC may not always be mandatory, but keeping all documents ready will help you complete the admission process smoothly and quickly.

Eligibility Criteria

Students appearing in the 6th Semester Examination and awaiting results may apply for PGET 2026 and receive provisional admission if selected. However, the final marksheet must be submitted within 7 days of result publication.

Seat Matrix

A. Traditional Programmes

Seat reservation policy for the Traditional Programmes of Gauhati University for the Academic Session 2026-27:

  • 50% seats reserved for Gauhati University candidates.
  • 50% seats reserved for candidates from other Universities (including Gauhati University candidates).
Special Exception:
For M.Sc. in Geology Programme, the reservation ratio will be:

30% for Gauhati University candidates
70% Open Category (for candidates from all Universities including Gauhati University).

B. Interdisciplinary Programmes

Seats in the Interdisciplinary Programmes remain open to all candidates irrespective of their University affiliation.

Other reservation provisions shall be applicable according to the rules of the Government of Assam and Gauhati University.

Selection Procedure

  1. All candidates must appear in the PGET-2026 to obtain admission into postgraduate programmes offered by Gauhati University and its affiliated colleges.

  2. Selection of eligible candidates will be based solely on PGET-2026 scores. Admission shall remain provisional until all original documents and certificates are verified by the concerned department.

  3. Preference for admission will be given to candidates securing higher marks in PGET-2026.

  4. Reservation of seats shall be implemented according to the guidelines prescribed by the Government of Assam and Gauhati University.

  5. Merely appearing in PGET-2026 does not guarantee admission. If a candidate fails to satisfy the minimum eligibility criteria during document verification, his/her candidature shall be cancelled.

Statutory Reservation Policy

Gauhati University follows the reservation policy prescribed by the Government of Assam for admission into postgraduate programmes. Candidates seeking admission under reserved categories must produce valid supporting certificates during admission and document verification.

Reservation Categories

  • Scheduled Caste (SC): 7% of seats reserved.
  • Scheduled Tribe (Plains) [ST(P)]: 10% of seats reserved.
  • Scheduled Tribe (Hills) [ST(H)]: 5% of seats reserved.
  • OBC / MOBC: 27% of seats reserved for Non-Creamy Layer candidates.
  • Differently-Abled Candidates: 3% reservation.
  • Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): 10% reservation.

OBC / MOBC Reservation Details

The reservation for OBC/MOBC candidates has been enhanced from 15% to 27% and is applicable only to candidates belonging to the Non-Creamy Layer category. Within the 27% reservation, special community-wise reservation is available for the following communities:

Reservation for Differently-Abled Candidates

Three percent (3%) of the total seats in each academic discipline are reserved for candidates with benchmark disabilities of not less than 40%. Candidates must submit a Medical Certificate issued by the Joint Director of Health Services of the concerned district and the prescribed reservation application form to the Office of the Secretary, University Classes, Gauhati University. Applicants may also be required to appear before a Medical Board constituted by the University.

Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)

Ten percent (10%) of seats in each academic programme are reserved for candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category. Candidates claiming reservation under EWS must produce a valid EWS Certificate issued by an officer not below the rank of Circle Officer at the time of admission.

Important Note

Candidates seeking admission under any reserved category must produce original certificates during admission and document verification. Failure to produce valid supporting documents may result in cancellation of the reservation benefit.

Non-Statutory Reservation Quota

(I) Reservation for Students from North-East India (Excluding Assam):
One supernumerary seat is reserved in each academic department having an intake capacity of 40 or fewer students. Departments with an intake capacity exceeding 40 students will have two supernumerary seats reserved for eligible candidates from North-East Indian states excluding Assam.

(II) Sons and Daughters of Permanent Gauhati University Employees:
One seat in each academic department with an intake capacity of 40 or less and two seats where intake exceeds 40 students are reserved on a supernumerary basis. Candidates must submit the prescribed application form to the Office of the Secretary, University Classes, Gauhati University.

(III) Sons and Daughters of Retired Gauhati University Employees:
A total of five supernumerary seats are reserved irrespective of departments. Applicants must submit the prescribed form to the Office of the Secretary, University Classes, Gauhati University.

(IV) Fringe Village Quota:
A total of fifteen supernumerary seats are reserved across all academic departments. However, a department can admit a maximum of one candidate under this quota. Applicants must be sons or daughters of residents of Garigaon, Sadilapur, Katiadalang (North Jalukbari), or Sundarbari. The applicant's forefathers must have been residents of these villages at the time of the establishment of Gauhati University. Candidates must submit the prescribed form along with land ownership documents and NRC 1951 records.

(V) Extra-Curricular & Co-Curricular Activities Quota:
One supernumerary seat is reserved in each academic department. Selection is based on achievements in Sports, Arts, or Cultural activities during the last three years preceding graduation. Candidates must have represented Gauhati University or the State of Assam in recognized events conducted by AIU, National Sports Federations, SAI, or other competent authorities. Selection will be made by a committee constituted by the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor.

(VI) N.C.C. Quota:
Three supernumerary seats are reserved irrespective of academic departments. Candidates must have represented Assam in the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi or possess an NCC 'C' Certificate. Only certificates obtained within the last three years preceding graduation will be considered.

(VII) N.S.S. Quota:
Two supernumerary seats are reserved irrespective of departments. Selection is based on merit and achievements in NSS activities. Preference will be given in the following order:
1. National Level NSS Awardees
2. State Level NSS Awardees
3. Members of the Indian Youth Delegation Team (International Youth Exchange)
4. Republic Day Camp Participants
5. National Level NSS Integration Camps and Programmes
6. State Level NSS Integration Camps and University Level NSS Programmes

(VIII) Sons and Daughters of Ex-Defence Personnel:
One supernumerary seat is reserved in each academic department for eligible candidates belonging to this category.

Important Notes

  1. Under Non-Statutory Reservation Quotas (Categories II to VIII), if more than one eligible candidate applies for a supernumerary seat, only one candidate per category will be selected for each programme. This restriction does not apply to the North-East India quota.
  2. Candidates applying under Non-Statutory Quotas and the Differently-Abled category must submit the prescribed application form, self-attested testimonials, and supporting documents to Room No. 14, Office of the Secretary, University Classes, Gauhati University, Jalukbari, Guwahati – 781014, either in person or by post before the commencement of the Entrance Test.
  3. Candidates applying under General, Statutory Reservation, or EWS categories must submit relevant certificates to their respective Departments, Institutes, or Centres at the time of admission.
  4. Candidates seeking admission under reserved categories must be permanent residents of Assam. Production of a valid Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) at the time of admission is mandatory.

Criteria for Reservation Under NCC & NSS Quota

  1. Those who have obtained NCC “C” Certificate or have participated in the Republic Day Parade under NCC.
  2. Those who represented the University in NSS Camp at National Level.
  3. Those who have obtained NCC 'B' Certificate or have participated in the Republic Day Parade under NCC. (This is applicable only for the students applying for admission into integrated courses).

Important Note:

The above certificates must have been obtained within the last three years preceding admission.


Criteria for Reservation Under Extra Curricular & Co-Curricular Activities

Preference will be given to candidates in the following order:

  1. Those who represented the country in International Events.
  2. Those who won prizes at recognised National Level Events.
  3. Those who won prizes in Inter-University Sports / Cultural / Literary Events.
  4. Those who represented Gauhati University in Inter-University Sports / Cultural / Literary Meet under GU Sports Board.
  5. Those who won prizes in Inter-College Youth Festival, GU and Inter-College Sports Meet under GU Sports Board.
  6. Those who won prizes at recognised State Level Competitions.
  7. Students who were awarded Fellowships / Scholarships by Central Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth Welfare for excellence in Art, Culture, and Sports.

Required Documents

  1. Quota Application Form with recent passport-size photograph and signature.
  2. Copy of the PGET Application Form.
  3. Relevant supporting certificates based on the quota category claimed.

For Extra-Curricular & Co-Curricular Quota:
All relevant certificates from National, State, and District levels must be enclosed with the signature of the certificate holder.

For Ex-Defence Personnel Quota:
A copy of the Defence ID of the parent must be enclosed with proper seal and signature.

Fee Structure

Fee Waiver is available for students enrolled in non-self-financed courses and possessing a valid Ration Card.

Free admission is not applicable for Self-Financed Courses.
